The Richest Man in England Still Wants to Buy Manchester United

 

One of England's richest men, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, re-awakened his intention to buy Manchester United from the Glazer Family. Ratcliffe is interested in buying Manchester United after the Glazer Family revealed their intention to sell some of their shares in the club. Yesterday (17/8/2022), the Glazer Family was reported to be selling its minority stake. This option came out in light of the massive fans' insistence on the Glazer Family's openness to new investors in the club.

Not yet willing to let go of MU ownership on a large scale, the Glazer family only wants to release it worth five billion pounds, or the equivalent of Rp89 trillion.

 

1. Potential investors

Ratcliffe, a man who has a wealth of up to 25 billion US dollars or equivalent to Rp. 369 trillion, is considered a potential investor for MU. In addition to his huge business empire, Ratcliffe is also a MU fan. This fact is what makes Ratcliffe able to tune in with MU. There was a chance that he would be more grounded and able to listen to the fans' voices than the Glazers.

"If there is a plan to sell the club, Jim is clearly a potential buyer. We are certainly interested in talking about the prospects for long-term ownership of the club. It's not about how much money will be spent," a spokesman for INEOS, Ratcliffe's company, told The Times.

2. Had to buy Chelsea

Ratcliffe actually almost became the owner of Chelsea. When Roman Abramovich announced the sale of the Blues' holdings, Ratcliffe quickly started negotiations.

However, at that time Ratcliffe lost to Todd Boehly who was supported by a number of friends to buy Chelsea in a consortium. Ratcliffe's bid, which was only £4.25 billion, or equivalent to Rp75 trillion, still lost to Boehly and his friends.

If in line with his idol club, Ratcliffe should buy MU.

However, in fact Ratcliffe chose to buy League 1 club, Nice. He had previously considered buying Newcatle United, Chelsea and Leeds United. On 29 August 2019, Ratcliffe finally bought Nice for a transaction value of £91 million (Rp1.644 trillion).
